In the first week of July, 2020, the Western Ghats of Kerala started experiencing heavy rain falls and is in the verge of facing yet another disaster. Kerala has already faced huge disaster in 2018, 2019 during the same period almost in the same epicenters, in the same Districts – Idukki, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode. The affected population are the historically marginalized and excluded communities – Dalits, Adivasis, Fishing Communities and migrant plantation labourers. RIGHTS is a community-funded NGO working in Kerala for the rights and betterment of vulnerable communities. In recent past, it has been active in the areas of rural employment, skills development, rural infrastructure, COVID-19 relief and education. The floods in Kerala come at a time when these communities are already reeling under the economic and health impacts of COVID-19. Around 25,000 people, of which a quarter are children, have been displaced and rendered homeless by this natural disaster. According to a CNN news report, 43 fatalities have been reported as a direct result of these floods. Those who have survived the immediate effect of landslide and floods are in imminent danger of water-borne diseases that accompany an inundation of this scale. The treacherous hilly terrain of Kerala makes flood relief a very challenging task for the government. Therefore the role of local grassroots organizations like RIGHTS, who’re intimately familiar with the local situation and connected with local communities, is critical in providing useful relief. - RIGHTS Founder Ajay Kumar has forumlated an immediate intervention plan to provide relief to those affected: - Supply of dry ration and NFI (Non Food Item) kits. - Monitoring and safeguarding children and the vulerable population in the rehabilitation process. - Provision of educational material for children so their education is not interrupted. This includes devices for online instruction. - Direct cash transfer to supplement loss of livelihoods. - COVID-19 health monitoring and provision of protective equipment: masks, cleaning supplies to the displaced being housed in temporary relief camps. More than 200 people are known to have died, some are still missing, and thousands others have been injured. This came at a time when the Lebanese nation was already suffering from a catastrophic economic situation, an unprecedented pandemic and government corruption.

We are all in shock witnessing the massive explosion that happened in Beirut on the 4th of August. This comes at a time when the Lebanese nation is already suffering from a catastrophic economic situation, an unprecedented pandemic and relentless government corruption. The impact was intense, rippling through several areas of the capital and could be heard 149 miles away on the island of Cyprus. According to the Lebanese Red Cross, the reported loss of life is more than 100 people and 4,000 injured. Currently, search and rescue teams are still digging through rubble looking for missing persons. There is significant damage to structures and authorities continue to assess damage. The exact cause of the explosion remains unconfirmed, though Lebanon authorities have stated that highly explosive material that has been stored at the port for years had blown up following a fire. Lebanese Red Cross teams are on the ground responding to humanitarian needs. All 125 Lebanese Red Cross ambulances are responding to the site of the explosion, rescuing and transporting the critically wounded to hospitals. On site, the Lebanese Red Cross is performing search and rescue in addition to treating people suffering from injuries. Triage and first aid stations have been set up across the Beirut port to treat injuries. Many Lebanese people have lost their homes and essentials. In response, the Lebanese Red Cross is providing emergency shelter for 1,000 families and anticipates providing shelter for as many as 10,000 families in the coming months. Food, water, hygiene kits, masks, gloves and other essentials are being distributed to vulnerable families in need. To meet emotional support needs, trained team members are providing crisis counseling to the community. For family members that have been separated by this event, the Red Cross Restoring Family Links program is reconnecting families. The primary focus is saving lives right now. As hospitals continue to be overwhelmed, the Lebanese Red Cross has 36 health centers and nine mobile medical units operating in all regions of the country. These medical services are provided to all people in need, free of charge. The money will be spent to the Lebanese Red Cross. The Fistula Foundation works to prevent fistula in the first place and provides surgery to correct it. Between 2009 and 2018, the Fistula Foundation provided 39,866 of these surgeries to women in 32 countries. This life-changing surgery can be provided for less than $600. O.U.R. paves the way for permanent eradication of Child Sex Trafficking through coordinated rescue and recovery planning. In the past six years of existence, O.U.R. has rescued 3,800 victims and assisted in the arrests of more than 2,100 traffickers around the world.

A Fundraising Race Running a heart through Germany because societal needs are many and varied. No matter if children, elderly people or people in an area of crisis, there are many hot spots that need our attention. My intention is to influence something greater than myself, do a good thing, and support some organizations and people who are helping children, seniors, needy people in an area of crisis, institutes for cancer research, and more. All this in addition to a sportive challenge which will be worth the hurt. I wanted to have this fundraising race as a new life experience and I have to say, it has worked out already. The plan was to do it in May 2020 but due to COVID-19 I have to postpone it to May 2021. Now I’ll make the project even bigger! I’ll donate 0,10€ per kilometer I train till May 2021! During my Heart Run thru Germany I’ll donate 1€ per kilometer I run and hope that some others do almost the same!
